Author, speaker, entrepreneur, and influencer Dr. Sagashus Levingston will be the keynote speaker as Omega School celebrates its 51st Anniversary Independence Through Education Brunch at the Olin Park Pavilion on Friday, June 30 at 11:30 a.m.
“This is our main fundraising event for the year and happy to say we are already sold out,” Omega School Principal and Executive Director Oscar Mireles tells Madison365.
Omega School, located on Badger Road across the street from Centro Hispano on Madison’s south side, has given thousands of students individual support and has helped to eliminate obstacles that keep students from getting their GED. The organization recently hosted its Spring Commencement Ceremony at the Madison College Goodman South Madison Campus on Madison’s South Side.
“Our GED graduation ceremony last Thursday had 40 GED/HSED graduates who have now earned a high school credential and moving forward to the next phase of their lives,” Mireles says.
Omega School’s one-to-one instructional approach and individualized support include things like bus passes, gas cards, scholarships for GED test fees and have proven that their “wrap-around support” is crucial to helping students overcome challenges of location, income status and family support. Many of Omega School’s graduates are often the first ones in their families to graduate with a high school diploma.
The keynote speaker for Friday’s brunch event will be Levingston, the founder of the Infamous Mothers brand, who is also an author, speaker, and influencer who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her mission is to help women accomplish “the impossible.” Levingston also hosts a podcast, and does blogging, coaching and leading courses through Infamous Mothers LLC.
The emcee for the 51st Anniversary Independence Through Education Brunch will be Joy Cardin who has worked 31 years at Wisconsin Public Radio, including 14 years as host of “The Joy Cardin Show”
Awards for community leadership will be presented to three individuals at the brunch including:
- Diane Ballweg, Philantrophy Award
- Carol Stotlar, Leadership Award
- Linda Harfst Partnership Award
“The award recipients have demonstrated a long-term commitment to making Madison and Dane County a better place for all to live and prosper,” Mireles says.
