A jury has found former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger guilty of murder of Botham Jean after less than 24 hours of deliberation.
The ex-Dallas police officer who fatally shot Jean in his apartment in September was indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge last year.
Jean, a 26-year-old accountant and native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, was killed on September 6 as he watched a football game in his apartment. Guyger, Jean’s downstairs neighbor, told investigators she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own and thought she’d encountered an intruder. She has since been fired from the department.
Jean’s death has been in the national news and has prompted many protests in Dallas against police brutality and racism.
