The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (WCO) will present the third concert of the Masterworks Series with “Goodyear Returns” featuring guest pianist Stewart Goodyear  on Friday, Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m. in the Capitol Theater of the Overture Center for the Arts.

Proclaimed “a phenomenon” and “one of the best pianists of his generation,” Goodyear joins the WCO to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 in B flat and the concert opens with the US Premiere of Christopher Blake’s “Night Journey to Pawarenga,” according to a press release from WCO. It is the second of four works comprising an award-winning suite for string orchestra commissioned by Maestro Sewell.  Each work of the suite is based on images in the photo essay A Journey by renowned New Zealand photographer Robin Morrison. Night Journey to Pawarenga is inspired by a striking image of the small  church of St Gabriel at Pawarenga, Whangape Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. Closing the concert is Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite,” which the composer himself referred to as his “discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible.”

In addition to the concert, ticketholders are also welcome to attend the pre-concert discussion with Maestro Andrew Sewell and Stewart Goodyear. The discussion will focus on the repertoire being performed that evening and the inspiration drawn from the original works.
