The Wisconsin Union Theater will host The Jones Family Singers in Shannon Hall on Friday, April 29, 8 p.m.
The Jones Family Singers consists of five sisters, two brothers and their father, Bishop Fred A. Jones. The Wall Street Journal described them as “Modern practitioners of a long musical tradition … infusing their joyful, reverent songs with elements of vintage soul and R&B.”
It is gospel music – but fans of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Vintage Trouble will also find a hip shaking and spiritually uplifting workout at the core.
“The three-generation gospel collective’s high-energy performances are the living embodiment of the indelible connection between the black church and its rock and soul offspring,” notes the Austin Chronicle. “It was all joyful praise, brilliantly timed with one crescendo after another” adds the New York Times, and both Rolling Stone and NPR called them “a must see act” at SXSW 2014.
The Jones Family Singers have traveled and performed all over the world, in churches and festivals, prisons and nightclubs. They performed at New York City’s globalFEST and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center in early 2015, and received a standing ovation at Lincoln Center this past summer.
Their impressive onstage presence combined with their family dynamic both on and offstage sparked filmmaker Alan Berg to create a documentary film about the group. They are currently touring all across the United States after completing a tour in Russia and several European countries.
This performance is presented by the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Performing Arts Committee and supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
