Madison College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Las Curanderas: From Ashes, We Rise, an exhibition featuring the work of Latina artists from across Wisconsin.
The exhibit invites the community to explore stories and perspectives rooted in identity, resistance, healing and belonging.
“The exhibition is more than a collection of artwork,” said Nicole Sandoval, Madison College’s community engagement specialist, in a press release “It creates a space for Latina artists to share their experiences, stories and perspectives while inviting community members to witness and engage with their work.”
The public opening reception will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Gallery at Madison College’s Truax campus. The artwork will remain on display through Oct. 15.
The exhibit’s theme is inspired by the phrase, “Que los queme el fuego, que los queme el fuego, y vengan nuevas flores” — “Let the fire burn them, let the fire burn them, and may new flowers emerge” — from Natalia Lafourcade’s song “María la Curandera.”
Madison College and Latinos Organizing for Understanding and Development (LOUD) are hosting the exhibition. It is curated by Jessica M. Gutiérrez and Issis Macias.
