Madison Alder Charles Myadze was arrested and booked into the Dane County Jail Thursday afternoon, a city of Madison spokesman confirmed to Madison365.

Dane County Jail records indicate Myadze has been charged with four counts of strangulation and one count each of burglary, attempted burglary, battery in commission of a burglary, false imprisonment, and battery with substantial bodily harm.

Myadze, who represents District 18 on Madison’s north side, was censured by the Common Council on Tuesday. The censure resolution cites allegations by three women — a fellow alder, a city employee and a member of the public — that Myadze sexually harassed them.

The resolution does not mention three other women who alleged that Myadze physically abused them over the course of many years, including while he was in office

Former deputy mayor Gloria Reyes, now the deputy director of the Safety and Justice Service Team for Ramsey County in Minnesota, told Madison365 that Myadze choked, grabbed, punched and shook her on numerous occasions, and knocked her unconscious in November 2021. She shared photos of bruises she says he inflicted on her.

In an interview Sunday, Myadze said Reyes’s claims were “somewhat not true,” and any time she sustained injuries, he was acting in self-defense.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes is expected to issue a statement later Thursday evening.
