In an unbelievable, history making-upset, 16 seeded University of Maryland-Baltimore County has defeated number 1 ranked Virginia 74-56.
UMBC is the first 16 seed to ever defeat a top seed in the 79-year history of the NCAA tournament.
UMBC was led by senior guard Jairus Lyles who scored a game high 28 points.
Number 1 seeds were 135-0 entering Friday’s game. UMBC moves on to play Kansas State on Sunday.
The win was the biggest of several upsets in the first round, as 13th-seeded Buffalo knocked off Arizona, number 11 Loyola Chicago beat Miami, and 13th-seeded Marshall upset Wichita State.
