Oshkosh Mayor Lori Palmeri has defeated Republican Donnie Herman with 53 percent of the vote to represent Wisconsin’s 54th Assembly District in the state legislature.

The district encompasses most of the City of Oshkosh.

“I’m ready to get to work right away,” Palmeri told Madison365 just before delivering her victory speech. “The Oshkosh values of fair wages and taxes, affordable housing, clean environment and strong schools … those are the values that led us to victory tonight.”

She also had a message for the 10,382 people who voted for Herman.

“My message for the people who didn’t vote for me is that I represent them too,” she said. “I’m going to continue to do what I did as mayor, build bridges, be available.”

It’s an important win for the Democrats, who hold the seat as longtime Democratic representative Gordon Hintz retires from the Assembly.

Palmeri becomes the first Latina, and first person of color, to represent the Oshkosh area in the Assembly.
