Positive coronavirus test rate rises slightly as 870 new cases identified

The rate of coronavirus tests returning positive results rose Wednesday to 5.9 percent — up slightly from 5.3 — as more than 14,000 tests returned 870 positive results, according to state and county public health data. That brings the total case count for Wisconsin to 51,049. Of those, just over 9,700 are considered active, about the same number as Tuesday.

Six more fatalities were reported – two in Racine County and one each in Milwaukee, Rock, Washington and Waukesha Counties. One fatality that had been reported in Fond du Lac County was removed from the data. Thus, the state’s total death toll rose by five to 911. Additionally, 18 people who tested positive for coronavirus infection died of other causes, and are not counted as covid fatalities.

The highest local new case count came in Milwaukee County, with 241 new cases and 9.91 percent of tests coming back positive.

Manitowoc County: 15 new cases, 26.32 percent positive tests
Outagamie County: 17 new cases, 5.11 percent positive tests
Ozaukee County: 12 new cases, 3.74 percent positive tests
Racine County: 27 new cases, 2.92 percent positive tests
Rock County: 20 new cases, 10.99 percent positive tests
Sauk County: 10 new cases, 3.88 percent positive tests
Sheboygan County: 53 new cases, 23.45 percent positive tests
St Croix County: 24 new cases, 13.48 percent positive tests
Walworth County: 20 new cases, 6.32 percent positive tests
Washington County: 23 new cases, 5.25 percent positive tests
Waukesha County: 110 new cases, 9.55 percent positive tests
Wood County: 13 new cases, 7.1 percent positive tests

The rate of disparity in Latino populations has improved but continues to stand out. Twenty-five percent of total cases are now Latino people, as are 14.6 percent of today’s cases. Latinos make up just seven percent of the state’s overall population.

Similarly, 15 percent of all cases are Black people, as are 23 percent of total COVID-19 related deaths in the state. Black people make up just six percent of the state’s population.
