Public health officials confirmed Monday that 16-year-old Isai Morocho died of COVID-19 in late November.

Morocho is the youngest Wisconsinite to die of COVID-19 complications, according to Public Health Madison & Dane County officials. Morocho was a student at Madison East High School.

“The coronavirus does not discriminate based on age, which underscores just how important it is for all of us to take precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this virus,” PHMDC Communications Supervisor Sarah Mattes said. “We send sympathy and comfort to the family of this young person and all families who have lost loved ones during this pandemic.”

PHMDC officials said Morocho’s death will be included in the county’s COVID-19 dashboard on Tuesday. Deaths are not reported on the dashboard until officials receive a death certificate or record that show the death was due to COVID-19, according to Mattes.

The Madison Metropolitan School District announced Morocho’s death after Thanksgiving weekend.

Morocho’s aunt, Maria A. SantaCruz, described the teen as a “good young man that was loving to his parents, siblings. He was (a) very good friend to many.”
