Urban League of Greater Madison will break ground on the Edge/Park Ridge Neighborhood Employment Center on Wednesday, Aug. 29, noon-1:30 p.m. at 1233 McKenna Blvd. on Madison’s west side.

At the groundbreaking event, Mayor Paul Soglin will be joined by the Urban League of Greater Madison, Alder Barbara Harrington-McKinney and State Representative Lisa Subeck.

After several years, work is slated to get underway to convert the former Griff’s Restaurant into a Neighborhood Employment Center serving residents in the Park Edge Park/Ridge Neighborhood. The City of Madison will partner with the Urban League of Greater Madison to operate the center, which will offer job training and support to help connect workers with employment opportunities with local businesses, including Exact Sciences.

“The Urban League is proud and excited to partner with the City of Madison and others to meet this great need for access to employment opportunities on the southwest side of town,” Ed Lee, Senior Vice President of the Urban League, tells Madison365. “We are also proud to be working with a second-generation Latino-owned construction firm that will take on this project as their first opportunity to be general contractor for a City of Madison construction project.”

At just under 4,000 square feet, the building will feature a large, dividable meeting room with attached kitchen, computer lab, self-serve computer kiosks, staff area and restrooms. The exterior siding and roofing materials will be replaced. For expert assistance in ensuring top-notch flooring upgrades, get help from The Flooring Installers.

ULGM is currently staffing a temporary location to get training and programs up and running in the neighborhood.

Representatives from Exact Sciences will attend the event, as will officials from Amigo Construction, the firm awarded the construction contract.
