Dane County confirmed 97 new coronavirus cases this morning, bringing the County’s total to 8,000 – less than a week after passing 7,000 on September 9, when 487 positive cases were reported. As of this morning, there are 6,269 recovered cases while 1,689 are currently active. This drops the percentage of active cases at 21.1 percent.
Most of the 97 new cases were attributed to tests processed September 15, with 90 positive cases reported for that date while the rest were attributed to September 14, bringing the total for September 14 to 245. September 9 continues to hold the record for a single day increase with 487 positive cases attributed to that day.
On Monday afternoon, Public Health of Madison and Dane County updated some data details for the week of September 1 – 12, noting that three out of four positive results those days were from UW Madison.

In addition, 82 percent of the cases attributed to September 13 are aged 18-22, according to data provided by Public Health Madison & Dane County. Madison365 expects a break down in the number of positive of cases in that age rage for the previous two weeks to be shared when Public Health of Madison and Dane County releases their weekly Data Snapshot on late Thursday afternoon.
About 34 percent of today’s new cases are aged 20-29, with 33 new cases in that age group. Those aged 10-19 grew by 29 new cases with 30 percent of all new positive tests. Since September 2, cases in ages 10-19 have grown by 203 percent, while cases in those in their 20s have grown by 33.3 percent in the last two weeks.
Adults in their 40s and 50s both grew by double digits today, adding 12 and 10 new cases respectively. Those in their 30s grew by eight new cases while children aged 0-9 grew by three cases and adults in their 60s by one.
Dane County’s death toll from COVID-19 remained at 41 today. As of this morning, 26 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Dane County, with seven of those in the ICU. The total number of Dane County residents ever to be hospitalized for COVID-19 is still at 347 as of this morning.
Dane County’s seven-day average for cases is now at 205.5, while the 14-day average is now 168.2 cases per day. The Forward Dane reopening plan required that the daily new case average fall below 20 before moving to the next phase. Further, PHMDC required a daily new case count below 39 for four consecutive weeks to open schools for grades three through five, and below 19 for four consecutive weeks to open grades six through 12, for in-person instruction. Last Thursday evening, the State Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction allowing schools to open for in-person instruction. On Monday, several Dane County private schools reopened.
Yesterday, Public Health of Madison and Dane County announced that they would be stepping up enforcement on bars and restaurants with the assistance with Madison Police.
At the time of this update, the most updated data on positive test percentage for a single day is for September 15, which is at 4.2 percent while the positive test percentage for September 14 has increased to 2.4 percent. The positive percentage for September 12 has been updated to 4.2 percent and September 13 is at 6.7 percent. Madison365 expects that these numbers will be adjusted as more negative and positive tests are fully processed and attributed to the appropriate dates in the coming days. According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s data dashboard, as of 2 pm yesterday, Public Health of Madison and Dane County and UW testing had confirmed 24 new positive cases from UW. Of that 24, only two came from on campus testing. The low number of results were a result of no testing being done on campus over the weekend and none done by the County on Sunday.
According to UW’s data dashboard, they have attributed all of the 24 positive tests to September 14 . UW attributes positive tests to the date results are received and not on the date a test was taken. PHMDC attributes results to the day a test was taken.
The seven day average of UW-related cases per day has decreased from 181.6 to 169.6. The seven-day percentage of positives for students on campus is at 10.3 percent. In total, there are now 2,191 positive cases from UW: 2,160 from students and 31 from employees. UW students now make up 98.5 percent of all UW cases. Of those 2,191 cases, 1,516 were identified in on-campus testing. As of this morning, UW has run 28,351 tests since on campus testing began on August 6 with 5.4 percent of those tests coming back positive.
