20 more deaths reported as hospitalizations drop by 1 and 110 new cases in Dane County

A day after announcing restrictions on gatherings would be eased, Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 20 more people have died from COVID-19.

The 20 new deaths brings the county’s total to 135 this morning. These deaths all occurred in those older than 70, with 13 in their 80s, six in their 90s and one in their 70s. Twelve of those deaths were women and one person was Asian. Since December 2, reported deaths of COVID-19 have increase 34 percent and have been centered around those 70 and older. PHMDC said on Twitter this morning that the deaths occurred in both November and December.

Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported 110 new cases this morning which gives the county a new cumulative total of 30,684. Recovered cases grew to 27,617 as active cases dropped down to 2,932 or 9.6 percent of all cases.

Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties —  decreased by 1 to 134.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased for 911 to 916. Today’s update includes two people in their 80s, two in their 70s and one person in their 90s. Of the four new hospitalizations for residents of Dane County, one person were Black and one was Asian.

The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks, however the increases are steadily declining. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that the number of hospitalized cases in those aged 10-19 have grown the most since December 2 with 26.7 percent. Adults in their 90s have grown 15.5 percent during the same time as adults in their 60s have grown 14.9 percent.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian/Native Alaskan have grown 28.6 percent and Black people grew by 13.3 percent since December 2. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who identify as Hispanic/Latinx in our community have grown past 5.1 percent for the past two weeks for as those who are Asian have grown 3.2 percent.

The 110 new cases were attributed to dates earlier this week with with only 65 attributed to December 15 while there were 37 attributed to December 14. The rest of the cases were distributed among dates earlier this week and late last week. The 7 day average of cases per day is now at 162, while the 14 day average is now at 200.

The percentage of the positive for these days also adjusted with December 15 at 2.2 while December 14 has increased to 4.6. December 13 has remained at 7.7 as December 12 adjusted to 4.4 and December 11 is at 4.6. The seven-day average remains at 4.9 while the 14 day average as of December 15 is at 5.4. Madison365 expects these numbers to adjust as Public Health of Madison and Dane County continue to receive updated results throughout the week.

Age groups between 10-69 all grew by double digits today with those in their 20s growing by 19, followed closely behind by those in their 30s with 18, adults in their 50s with 17, adults in their 40s with 16 and adults in their 60s with 11. In single digit growths, adults in children under 10 grew by seven, adults in their 80s by six, adults in their 90s by four and adults in their 70s by two.

When looking at our communities of color, those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 35 new cases or 31.8 percent of all new cases broken down by ethnicity. They continue to make up 15.6 percent of all cases. Black people in our community grew by 12 or 11 percent of all new cases and continue to make up 7.8 percent of all cases ever in Dane County. Asian people in our community grew by eight new cases and make up 3.5 percent of all cases while those who are American Indian/Native Alaskan grew by one cases and remain .8 percent of all cases.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 21.9 percent as adults in their 70s grew by 14.2 percent. Adults in their 80s grew by 14.1 percent and adults in their 60s by 13.0 since December 2.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, cases among Black people have grown by 11.0 percent while Asian people have grown by 11.9 percent. Those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown 10.4 percent while American Indian/Native Alaskan in our community have grown by 10.7 percent during this same period.

UW reported no new positive tests for the weekend for either students or staff. They currently have 5,242 cases since tracking began for campus. The updated 7 day average of cases is now at 11.3 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 13. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is now at 0.9 percent for students and 0.8 percent for employees from on campus testing.
