0

Africa Night 2022 will be held Tuesday, May 24, 6 p.m. at the Hamel Music Center.

Come enjoy Africa Night 2022. Drum Power will present the 9th-annual Africa Night citywide recital featuring students from 3rd to 12th grade. Students develop musical and life skills including discipline, community and leadership – our Pillars of Power. The program, directed by Yorel Lashley and Thomas Ross, will feature students from Madison Metropolitan Schools including Lowell & Schenk Elementary Schools, O’Keefe & Blackhawk Middle Schools, and East High School.
Suggested donations of $10 for adults and $5 for children will raise funds to support scholarships to the Drum & Dance Camp this summer (July 18–29). Africa Night is free for families of performers.
The performance will also feature professional and community guest artists from the Limanya Drum & Dance Ensemble and the Handphibians.
This year’s show will be a special revival of Africa Night at the UW–Madison Hamel Music Center after two years off due to Covid-19. Together, the performers will show the full scope and power of the traditions that the students are learning and continuing here in the Madison area. The youth performers and master drummers will demonstrate the cultural depth, musical power, and intricacy of the Djembe, Sabar and Samba traditions for all to enjoy, and inspiration will abound.
