Doug Jones, sworn in Wednesday as the junior senator from Alabama following a surprising win over former judge Roy Moore last month, announced former transportation official Dana Gresham as his chief of staff, making him the only Democratic Senator with an African American in that position. Two Senate Republicans, Sens. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Jerry Moran of Kansas, have black chiefs of staff.

Gresham served as Assistant Secretary for Governmental Affairs in the Department of Transportation in the Obama Administration. Before that he served as Chief of Staff to Rep. Arthur Davis (D-Alabama).
Gresham, an Alabama native, is a graduate of Georgetown University.
