Rayshard Brooks

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Fulton County District’s Attorney office are investigating an Atlanta man’s death after he was shot by the police who found him asleep at a Wendy’s drive-through on Friday night.

Rayshard Brooks, 27, failed a sobriety test and then was shot after a struggle over a Taser he grabbed from an officer, the authorities said. A bystander posted a video on social media which has been shared widely that showed the struggle between Brooks and officers. The video appeared to show Brooks running away when the police opened fire.

“The killing of in Atlanta last night demands we severely restrict the use of deadly force. Yes, investigations must be called for – but so too should accountability,” said former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Twitter Saturday.  “Sleeping in a drive-thru must not end in death.”

The shooting comes at a time of heightened tension over police brutality and calls for reforms across the U.S.
