An Australian cartoonist today is standing by his cartoon of tennis great Serena Williams that many feel is both racist and sexist.

Mark Knight, the editorial cartoonist for the Herald Sun in Melbourne mocked Williams after her loss to Naomi Osaka at Saturday’s U.S. Open final with a cartoon depicting her as a racist stereotype, with a huge nose and big lips.

“Don’t bring gender into it when it’s all about behavior,” Knight tweeted after his cartoon had created controversy on social media.

Williams made headlines on Saturday for her outburst over the officiating nightmare at the U.S. Open women’s final. After the match, Williams called out the double standard for the conduct of women’s tennis players versus men’s tennis players and the inconsistent application of the rules.
