Award-winning environmental justice activist Diamond Spratling to keynote 2023 Sustain Dane Summit Nov. 3

Diamond Spratling, an award-winning environmental justice activist, storyteller, and public speaker, will be the keynote speaker for the 2023 Sustain Dane Summit on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.

The 15th annual Sustain Dane Summit will engage around the topics of environmental justice, empowering youth in the sustainability movement, and community leadership. Spratling’s keynote will take place at 8:30 a.m.

Spratling is the founder of SpratlingGyirl + Environment, a national non-profit organization designed to educate, engage, and empower Black and Brown girls, women, and non-binary folx to stand up for environmental justice in their own neighborhoods. In addition to her work at Girl + Environment, Diamond has helped many cities, companies, and organizations globally to adopt meaningful, equitable processes that prioritize community and protect our planet.

Spratling’s keynote will be followed by an Interactive Climate Project Roundtable, a rapid roundtable of presentations, local leaders will share stories of their successful sustainability projects. Two transformative local projects — the Dane County Department of Waste and Renewables Sustainability Campus and the Lake Monona Waterfront redesign — will be highlighted.

Later in the afternoon, Sustain Dane will present Live Forward Awards to acknowledge changemakers and inclusive leaders who are locally promoting thriving sustainability, community healing, and resiliency.
