Dane County adds 205 new cases; massive COVID outbreak in state prison not yet counted in local data

Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 205 new positive cases from COVID-19 Monday, increasing the county’s cumulative total to 33,604.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported yesterday afternoon that Dane County had 33,807 new cases of COVID-19, 203 more than Dane County had reported. In response to an email from Madison365, a spokesperson from PHMDC said the discrepancy was “due to a recent outbreak in a Dane County Department of Corrections facility. Because this is a state facility under DOC jurisdiction, these cases have not been included in the data DHS sends us.” PHMDC expects to receive the additional cases from DHS and will be adding them to their dashboard soon.

Recovered cases in Dane County grew to 31,390, however, active cases also grew slightly for a second day to 2,032, or 6.05 percent of all cases. Yesterday, active cases were at 1,969 or 5.9 percent of all cases.

Hospitalizations in Dane County continued to grow slightly this morning from yesterday, according to today’s update, with 119 people from both in and out of Dane County hospitalized. Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported 33 of the 119 people in the hospital are in the ICU.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has been grown from 1,008 to 1,010 with one person in their 70s removed from the data. Of the three new people form Dane County hospitalized, two are in their 50s and one in their 30s. Two of the three are identified as Hispanic/Latinx.

The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks; however the increases are steadily declining. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data. As of this morning, those numbers reflect that the number of hospitalized cases in adults in their 90s and adults in their 20s have increased by 10.1 percent since December 21. Adults in their 50s have increased by 9.7 percent and children under 10 have grown by 7.7 percent. Hospitalizations overall for Dane County residents have grown 6.6 percent since December 21.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian/Alaskan in our community growing by 14.3 percent since December 21. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who are Black in our community have grown 6.1 percent as those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 7.9 percent in hospitalizations.

Of the new 205 cases reported today, 101 were attributed to January 3 while 94 were added to January 2 – increasing that day’s total to 112. The rest of the cases were added to dates late last week. The seven-day average of positive cases as of January 3 is at 159.3 while the 14-day average is now at 143.8 new cases per day.

The percentage of positive for January 3 is at 6.4 while January 2 now at 8.8. The new percentage of positive for January 1 is 7.8 while the December 31 is at 6.4. The seven-day percentage of positive as of January 3 is at 6.5 while the 14 day average is now at 5.4. Madison365 expects these numbers to adjust as Public Health of Madison and Dane County continue to receive updated results throughout the week.

Though age groups between 10 – 69 grew by double digits today, adults in their 20s grew by 49 new cases or 23.9 percent while adults in their 30s and 50s both grew by 36 new cases. Those aged between 10-19 grew by 26 new cases while adults in their 40s grew by 24 new cases and those in their 60s grew by 14 new cases. For single digit increases, children under 10 grew by eight new cases, those in their 70s by seven, adults in their 80s by three and adults in their 90s grew by two new cases.

When looking at our communities of color, those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx grew by 27 new cases or 13.2 percent of all new cases while Black people grew by 14 new cases or 6.8 percent of new cases. Those who are Asian added nine new cases while American Indian/Alaskans in our community added one additional case.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 8.4 percent as children under 10 have grown by 7.5 percent. Adults in their 70s grew by 7.8 percent and adults in their 60s have grown by 7.6 percent since December 21. Overall, cases have grown by 6.1 percent since December 21.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, those who are Asian have grown by 8.5 percent since December 21 while those who are American Indian/Alaskan have grown by 6.0 percent. Black people gave grown by 5.5 percent during this same time period while Hispanic/Latinx people have grown by 5.4 percent.

UW has not had an update since December 30. Based on their current data, there are 4,828 total positive cases for UW students, and 545 positive cases for UW employees for a total of 5,342 total cases from UW since tracking began for campus. The most recent updated 7 day average of cases is now at 6.0 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 29. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is at 0.8 percent for students and 1.1 percent for employees from on campus testing as of December 29.
