The DeForest Village Board decided Tuesday night to file a complaint against the chief of the DeForest Police Department.

Board members voted to file the complaint in a closed session in response to a video that surfaced online in which Chief Daniel Furseth can be heard making comments about a group of African-American men from a squad car in May of 2015.

The video was made before Furseth was named chief of the department.

Earlier this summer, Furseth rescinded his offer to resign as police chief.

In June, the village offered Furseth a severance package worth about $120,000, including six months worth of salary, accrued sick time and unused vacation time. Furseth declined that severance package.

The Village’s Police and Fire Commission could decide to fire Furseth once the board files its complaint.

Board trustees told News 3 that filing the complaint “will likely occur in the next day or two.”
