The Irwin A & Robert D Goodman Foundation has made a $250,000 gift to Centro Hispano of Dane County for Campaign CENTRO, Centro announced on Monday, bringing the organization closer to its goal of $20 million, with almost $16 million raised to date.

Centro will be building a new home for the Latinx community on Madison’s South Side where it will seed the expansion of the organization’s workforce and educational programs. Campaign CENTRO aims to raise $20 million dollars by the end of 2023, when Centro will be celebrating 40 years and opening its doors to the community.

“Community support from organizations such as the Goodman Community Foundation motivates us. We are thrilled to have received this gift to Campaign Centro,” said Centro Hispano Executive Director Karen Menendez Coller in a statement.  “With this support, we are one step closer to achieving our dream of a new home providing more space for developing partnerships and strategies that will ensure a thriving Latinx community. We are excited about all that is to come in 2023.“

The gift from the Goodman Foundation will support sustainability in the building design and community engagement in the outdoor landscape so that wellness activities for youth and adults (i.e. zumba, pop-up soccer, community market) can be prioritized as an essential engagement tool, Centro said in a press release. This includes developing a community kitchen and outdoor plaza as well as seed funds for expanding community programming that prioritizes food, land, and the environment.

“The Goodman Foundation is proud to participate with other individuals, foundations and businesses in supporting Campaign CENTRO. The gift will continue the legacy of Irwin and Bob Goodman of supporting strong not for profits in the Madison area like Centro which provides much-needed resources for those in need,” said Goodman Foundation Executive Director E.G. Schramka.
