Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 138 new cases this morning which gives the county a new cumulative total of 31,548. Recovered cases grew to 28,988 as active cases dropped to 2,424 or 7.7 percent of all cases.
Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties — grew to 143 with the number of people in ICUs decreasing to 39.
For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased to 943 this morning with two people in their 70s and one person in their 80s and one in their 90s. Of those two additional people hospitalized, one person was Asian and three were women.
The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks; however the increases are steadily declining. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that the number of hospitalized cases in adults in their 90s by 14.5 percent and those aged 10-19 have grown by 14.3 percent since December 7. Adults in their 80s have grown 12.9 percent during the same time as adults in their 70s have grown by 11.1 percent. Since December 7, hospitalizations overall for Dane County residents have grown 9.7 percent – a decrease from yesterday’s reported 9.8.
Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian/Native Alaskan grew by 16.7 percent while those who are Asia grew by 16.2 since December 7. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who are Black in our community have grown 8.1 percent and people who are Hispanic/Latinx by 2.6 percent.
The 138 new cases were attributed to dates earlier this week, with 86 cases attributed to December 20 while there were 40 more new cases attributed to December 19, increasing that day’s total to 116. The rest of the cases were distributed among dates last week. The 7 day average of cases per day is now at 141.3 while the 14 day average is now at 163.2.
The percentage of positive tests for these days was also adjusted with December 20 at 3.1 while December 19 has increased to 2.9. December 18 has adjusted to 3.3 as December 17 adjusted to 3.7 and December 16 is at 3.8. The seven-day average is at 3.7 while the 14 day average as of December 20 is at 4.5. Madison365 expects these numbers to adjust as Public Health of Madison and Dane County continue to receive updated results throughout the week.
Age groups between 0-69 grew by double digits today with those in their 40s grew the most today with 28 new cases or 20.3 percent of all new cases. Adults in their 20s grew by 24 new cases while those who are aged 10-19 grew by 21 new cases. Adult in their 50s grew by 18 new cases, adults in their 30s by 13, adults in their 60s by 11 new cases and children aged 0-9 grew by 10 new cases. In single digit increase, adults in their 70s grew by six, those in their 80s by four and adults in their 90s by three new cases.
When looking at our communities of color, those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 17 new cases or 12.3 percent of all new cases broken down by ethnicity. They continue to make up 15.6 percent of all cases. Black people in our community grew by 14 new cases or 10.1 percent of all new cases and now make up 7.9 percent of all cases ever in Dane County. Asian people in our community grew by five new cases and continue to make up 3.6 percent of all cases.
Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 22.6 percent as adults in their 80s grew by 13.7 percent. Adults in their 70s grew by 11.8 percent and adults in their 60s by 10.7 since December 7.
In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, cases among Black people have grown by 8.8 percent while Asian people have grown by 9.4 percent. Those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown 7.7 percent while American Indian/Native Alaskan in our community have grown by 6.8 percent during this same period.
UW reported seven new positives from on-campus testing for students while UW employees had two new positives from on-campus testing. All positive cases have been attributed to December 19. There are now 4,793 total positive cases for UW students – including three attributed to earlier dates in the data – and 519 positive cases for UW employees – including three attributed to earlier dates in the data – for a total of 5,312 total cases from UW since tracking began for campus. The updated 7 day average of cases is now at 9.6 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 18. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is now at .6 percent for students and 0.9 percent for employees from on campus testing.
