Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, announced on Tuesday that Sen. Kamala Harris from California will be his vice-presidential running mate, making her the first Black woman to run on a major political party’s presidential ticket.

“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked Kamala Harris,” Biden tweeted. He called Harris a “fearless fighter for the little guy” and “one of the country’s finest public servants.”

Harris was chosen over former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Representative Karen Bass and senators Tammy Duckworth and Elizabeth Warren, among others.
