Melissa Sargent wins Senate District 16 seat

    State Rep. Melissa Sargent will win the Democratic primary over Monona Grove School Board member Andrew McKinney, Madison365 projects.

    With 86 percent of the vote tallied, Sargent had earned 76.5 percent of the vote. She will face Republican Scott Barker on November 3.

    McKinney initially announced that he would run as an independent but later joined the Democratic primary.

    The seat, which represents Madison’s east side and communities north and east of the city, is being vacated by the retirement of longtime Senator Mark Miller.
