The CDC estimates that one in every five kids between the ages of 11 and 15 has at least one untreated cavity.
Madison College students are working to solve that problem this week by hosting free dental clinics.
The college’s dental hygienist students and staff will be performing free dental cleanings, x-rays, and sealants for kids 18 and under starting at 7:30 a.m.
It’s a chance for the Madison college students to get some practice on those procedures, while also addressing the need for free dental care in Madison.
Last year, about 150 kids received care. People at Madison College said not only do the free care clinics help families with their immediate dental needs, but they also promote healthier habits to prevent future dental problems.
“There is a lack of free dental care in Madison, and it is nice for us at Madison College to be able to open up our clinic and have a week where we can see children under 18,” said Tammy Downing, of Madison College’s Dental Hygiene program.
“I think we try to relate with the kids coming into the clinic,” Downing continued. “Our students are very good at educating our patients. We try to use different props to be more relatable to our patients and hopefully they take away not only a toothbrush but also the knowledge of how to use it.”

Madison College’s dental clinic is located in Room 151 of the Health Education building on Hoffman St. Parents need to be present during their kids’ cleaning.
