The 2026 Black Youth Academy is now accepting middle school students in the Madison area for a free, week-long summer experience, June 22-26, that teaches students about policing, first-responder careers, and other life and communication skills.

For more than 14 years, the Black Youth Academy has helped young leaders build confidence, accountability, and real-world skills. The Black Youth Academy is an opportunity to build leadership skills, learn about law enforcement and first-responder careers, develop life and career readiness skills, connect with mentors and community leaders, and grow in a structured, supportive team environment, according to a press release from the City of Madison.

“This week is all about relationship building. We want these kids to be able to see an officer on the streets and feel comfortable approaching them,” said Officer Tyrone Cratic Williams, who is helping coordinate this year’s camp, in a statement.

Participants will work closely with officers, instructors, and community partners at the Madison Police Training Center. The week wraps up with a graduation celebration honoring their achievements.

Space is limited and applications are due April 20. Interested students and families can apply here or by contacting CORE at (608) 267-1965 or [email protected].
