The Madison-Cusco Sister City initiative will be hosting a reception tonight at Ovation 309 in the Sky Club in downtown Madison for Mayor Luis Beltrán Pantoja Calvo of Cusco, Peru.

The reception will be attended by several members of the Madison community, according to a press release from Mundo Esperanza, including both the mayors of Cusco and Madison, several City of Madison and Dane County staff and elected officials, esteemed members of the academic and scientific community from the UW-Madison and Madison College, Ho-Chunk tribal leaders and members of the Latino communities, members of Madison’s other sister cities and other business leaders.

Mundo Esperanza, a Madison-area non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and raising awareness of the principles, practices, and spiritual beliefs of Indigenous peoples across the Americas, will be one of the main groups hosting Mayor Calvo.

“The significance of community-based organizations engaging in international exchanges is growing steadily, and sister cities serve as excellent platforms for such endeavors. This marks a significant stride for Mundo Esperanza and the Madison-Cusco Sister City, operating as a community-based organization facilitating international connections.” said Vic Villacrez of Mundo Esperanza, in a press release.

There will be indigenous performances, along with food from beer, brats, and burgers to great Asian and Peruvian cuisine.

While in Madison, the Cusco team is scheduled to convene with City and County officials, industry experts, and university professionals to exchange insights on sustainable landfill management, public transportation strategies, recycling efforts, and advancements in smart city technology. A comprehensive agenda will include a guided tour of the landfill and a high-level meeting with the mayor of Madison and key departmental leaders.

As part of the mayor’s visit, Mundo Esperanza, in collaboration with the private sector, UW-Madison, and Universidad Andina Del Cusco, is also hosting the second Condor Eagle Conference of the Americas at Engineering Hall on the UW-Madison campus on Tuesday, March 19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
