Next Monday will bring another year of celebrating the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr., and with it, many opportunities to get out in the local community and celebrate with others. An MLK Commemorative Breakfast in Beloit looks to be such an opportunity as the 8:30 a.m. event at the Beloit Eclipse Event Center looks to encourage and empower attendees through the theme of “No Defeat! – Declaring Victory Over Adversity” and a keynote speech by Dr. Pierre Johnson.

Dr. Johnson grew up on the South Side Chicago and developed a commitment early on in standing up for oppressed and abused people after having to defend his mother from his father at an early age. Johnson would go on to find his path through the aid of his grandfather, Otis, who nurtured a passion for mentoring youth, his grandmother, Eva, who gave him a foundation in faith, and his Aunt Aileen who guided him on the path he would take to become a doctor by having him consider more than one life plan.

Dr. Johnson’s path to becoming an OB-GYN started with intrigue in a Black OB-GYN who cared for his mother while she carried his younger brother, and that passion would lead to earning a degree from Xavier University of LA and went on to complete an internship at Washington Hospital Center before his residency at Southern Illinois University. Johnson would go on to be certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015 and become a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the highest accreditation in his field.

Dr. Johnson works in the Chicago area and established Pulse of Perseverance, a non-profit that looks to empower Black youth through instilling elements of success through establishing a Plan B through inspiration from Johnson’s Aunt, providing a community and mentorship at all stages, and providing tools of empowerment.

Proceeds from the event go towards The Pulse of Perseverance Project and the Rising Knights HBCU College Tour. Tickets for this family-friendly event start at $35 and there is a business professional attire dress code.
