Every city has a few citizens who by virtue of their personality, their values and their heart loom large in the health of that city and its history.
Darlene “Big Momma” Horner was one of those citizens and Madison will miss her dearly.
Darlene Horner lived in the Vera Court neighborhood on Madison’s north side, and she was a force to be reckoned with, passionate about the neighborhood and its residents, especially its children.
But she was more than that. She was, in the words of Madison365 CEO and President Henry Sanders, who grew up on the north side, “a true Madison treasure.”
In the early 1990s, Vera Court was among Madison’s most troubled neighborhoods. Its stability and desirable livability today is a testament to Big Momma and her advocacy on its behalf.
In a statement Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said all Horner asked was for others to get involved in their neighborhoods. Doing so today would be a fitting tribute.
