BoardWalk Academy, a free United Way training program for people who might not typically get asked to join nonprofit boards, will begin next week. Applications are open now.

The program is aimed especially at younger people, people of color and people of lower income. Childcare and dinner will be provided.

Over the course of six weekly Thursday evening meetings, trainings will center around the skills and background crucial to serve on nonprofit boards and committees. During the course, students will have the opportunity to identify their leadership styles and gain the confidence to seek out positions.

The focus for BoardWalk Academy is to give participants the knowledge, confidence and connections to serve on nonprofits boards.  United Way encourages people who are typically not asked to serve on boards, including recipients of service, people of color, people of lower income status and young people to apply.

BoardWalk Academy makes it easy to become involved. The program is free for participants, provides childcare and dinner. Transportation can also be coordinated.

“BoardWalk is more than just about serving on a board,” said May Lor, a Madison Gas and Electric employee and BoardWalk graduate. “It is about building connections and relationships and, most importantly, finding where I belong in the communities and where my passions are.”
