The Wisconsin Badgers football team is ranked eighth in the first College Football Playoff poll released Tuesday night.

The College Football Playoff selection committee has released the initial rankings of its third season. The top four spots belonged to Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, and Texas A&M. Washington is fifth, Ohio State, sixth and Louisville, 7th.

The Badgers(6-2) are ranked eighth in the Associated Press and Coaches’ polls.

The committee will release new rankings every week until Dec. 4, when its final rankings will determine the pairings for the national semifinals. Those games — the Fiesta Bowl, in Glendale, Ariz., and the Peach Bowl, in Atlanta — will be held Dec. 31. The winners will go to the national title game on Jan. 11 in Tampa, Fla.

Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez is a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee for the third year in a row.
