All adults regardless of age, health or occupation in 10 Milwaukee zip codes can be vaccinated beginning Monday, March 22, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley announced Tuesday.

Anyone 18 years of age or older living in 53204, 53206, 53205, 53218, 53215, 53223, 53216, 53209, 53224 or 53233 will be eligible. Those neighborhoods had some of the state’s highest rates of COVID-19 infection and the lowest rates of vaccination.

“Utilizing the ZIP code data is a step in the right direction towards serving our underrepresented neighborhoods of color and instilling confidence that they will be treated with equity and respect in our healthcare system,” Crowley tweeted.

As the state has rolled out vaccines based on age and occupation, rates of vaccination among people of color have been disproportionately low. While Black people make up about six percent of the state’s population, for example, they make up fewer than two percent of those who’ve been vaccinated.

The push to vaccinate Milwaukee’s most vulnerable neighborhoods is possible in large part due to increasing vaccine supply, which also led Governor Tony Evers to announce Tuesday that a wide swath of people with vulnerable health conditions initially scheduled to become eligible March 29 would be eligible a week earlier.
