Madison365 exists to tell the stories of Wisconsin’s communities of color and cover the issues important to those communities. We use excellent professional journalism to start conversations, find real and lasting solutions, build community, invite action and encourage emerging leaders in Wisconsin’s communities of color, and to foster dialog between members of diverse communities. Our journalism has been recognized with national and statewide awards.
About the job
Madison365 reporting interns will cover community news, events, culture, politics, et cetera, related to communities of color in Madison and across Wisconsin. Reporting to the Madison365 editor in chief, the reporter will:
- Produce and publish two news stories per week in accordance with 365 Media Foundation’s ethical standards and style guide.
- Take and edit photos to accompany stories (usually with your phone)
- Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with sources and community members, including leaders and members of communities of color as well as elected officials and other community leaders and community members
- Attend two editorial meetings per week (virtually or in person)
- Appear on 365 Media podcasts to discuss your stories
We are headquartered at the Black Business Hub on Madison’s South Side. We require some in-office hours but offer a flexible, hybrid work environment. Expect to work about 10 hours per week from June 1 through August 31; it’s fine if you have another job to pay the bills. And it’s fine if you have some travel planned; just let us know in advance.
Compensation will include a $500 stipend per summer, payable directly to the intern or to their institution in the form of a scholarship.
