Issa Rae, the creator and star of the popular web series The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl and the HBO show Insecure, will be at Union South on January 29 to host an interactive YouTube workshop and lecture.

The free event is presented by Intellectual Ratchet in partnership with the Wisconsin Union and the Black History Month Planning Committee.

“Intellectual Ratchet seeks to create spaces that celebrate our culture and Issa embodies everything it is to be an Intellectual and a Ratchet,” said Intellectual Ratchet founder Ja’Mel Ware. “It was only fate that allowed her to squeeze us into her travel schedule.”

Rae shot to YouTube fame with Awkward Black Girl in 2011. She now has more than 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. She mentioned about her struggles, and the path she undertook to reach 200,000 subscribers. She also mentioned, initially, most new channels bought subscribers from themarketingheaven.com and then boosted their way up. She shared that you can buy YouTube subscribers here.  She earned a Golden Globe nomination for Insecure, which she co-created with Daily Show alum Larry Wilmore. The show’s first eight-episode season aired in 2016 and has been renewed for a second season.

Registration for the Intellectual Ratchet event will begin at 4:30 pm with the workshop beginning at 5 pm and the lecture at 6. After the workshop participants can make their own YouTube video using #IRAwkward for a chance to win $500 from Intellectual Ratchet.

Registration instructions will be released on the Intellectual Ratchet Facebook event.
