MMSD restarts naming process for Southside Elementary

Southside Elementary School

The naming process for Southside Elementary School has restarted, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has announced.

Southside Elementary, formerly Allis Elementary, serves predominantly students of color and is located at 501 E. Badger Road, just off the Beltline’s Rimrock Road. The school has temporarily been called “Southside” as a placeholder when it first opened in August 2023 with the understanding that naming efforts would eventually resume and a permanent replacement would be chosen at a future, to-be-determined date.

Naming work began in the winter of 2023, while the building was still under construction; it was paused by the MMSD Board of Education due to superintendent transitions.

During the initial 30-day window that the process was active, MMSD received 74 proposals, all of which will be considered now that the process has resumed.

Community members are invited to submit a proposal to name the school. Proposals can be submitted online now through April 30, at 10 p.m.

Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to offer feedback via the naming webpage and submissions will be shared with both the Board and the 12-member ad hoc Citizens Naming Committee.
