The Academy Awards ended with a Hollywood-worthy plot twist.
Warren Beatty took a long moment — apparently to build suspense — before announcing La La Land as the winner for the Best Picture Oscar.
After the entire cast and crew took the stage and began their speeches, however, producer Fred Berger dropped a bomb: Moonlight had won.
As the Moonlight cast and crew incredulously hugged and took the stage, Beatty explained that he had been given the wrong envelope — the one meant for best actress winner Emma Stone.
“Clearly even in my dreams this could not be true,” said director Barry Jenkins. “But to hell with dreams. I’m done with it, because this is true.”

Earlier in the evening, the film set in a troubled Miami neighborhood won a best supporting actor honor for Mahershala Ali and best adapted screenplay for Jenkins and playwright Tarell Alvin CcCraney, who wrote In the Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, on which Moonlight is based.
