The NAACP Dane County is inviting parents, educators, reading specialists, literacy volunteers, librarians, book lovers, community advocates and organizations to Madison College Truax Campus on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2-5 p.m., for “The Right to Read: The Greatest Civil Rights Issue of Our Time.”
“The Right to Read” shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide the youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.
This movie screening and community conversation will focus on the groundbreaking documentary that talks about one community’s battle to reveal and surmount the unseen barriers to why Black children are struggling to claim their essential right to read. “The Right to Read” sheds light on the literacy crisis in America, highlighting how limited access to quality reading education disproportionately affects Black and brown children.
The discussion following the documentary viewing will “lay the groundwork for a broad community partnership designed to pursue the civil rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment, Brown vs Board of Education and the U.S. Constitution,” according to a press release from NAACP Dane County.
“This event marks the beginning of a transformative series of educational workshops and conversations designed to unite our community, amplify awareness of the educational experiences of Black children, and inspire actionable change,” NAACP Dane County said in a statement announcing the event. “By illuminating the literacy landscape, we call upon our community to recognize the urgent need for educational equity and to mobilize for systemic improvements.”
Madison College Truax campus is located at 1701 Wright St. on Madison’s East Side.
