State confirms more than 6,000 new cases, 12 deaths

The state of Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported a 6,048 new coronavirus cases Sunday on just under 18,000 tests, a positive test rate of 33.7 percent.

The seven-day positive test rate was not updated in the DHS data at the time of publication. On Saturday, the rate rose slightly to 36.5 percent, up slightly from Friday’s 36.2 percent.

After falling for three consecutive days, the number of people currently hospitalized for coronavirus infection increased again to 2096, 62 more than Saturday. Of those, 445 are in the ICU, 10 more than Saturday, while the patient population at the alternative care facility in Milwaukee fell to 18, down from 20 on Saturday.

The total number of cases ever confirmed in Wisconsin is now 312,342, of which nearly 69,600 — just over 22% — are considered active. That’s up by about 3,000 from Saturday.

The seven-day average of new cases per day rose to 6,767. The seven-day average of deaths rose slightly to 46.43.

Thirteen deaths were reported in 10 counties. One death that had been reported in Lincoln County was removed from the data, so the total death toll in Wisconsin rose by 12 to 2,637. Over the past week, 325 deaths have been reported.

At a press conference Monday, county and city leaders urged citizens to stay home, avoid gatherings and not to travel outside the county to attend gatherings. Governor Tony Evers reiterated the same message in a statewide address Tuesday.
