NEW YORK CITY – A University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus took home a Tony Award during Sunday night’s award ceremony.
Andre De Shields, 73, won the award for best-featured actor for his work as the god Hermes in the Broadway play “Hadestown.”
De Shields has previously been nominated twice, but has never taken home an award.
The Baltimore native began his career at UW-Madison in 1968 when he appeared in a nude production of “Peter Pan.” He later made his professional debut in “Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Music” at Chicago’s Shubert Theatre.
In 2007, he spoke at the UW-Madison spring commencement.
