UW–Madison Professor Emerita Gloria Ladson-Billings to deliver AERA Distinguished Lecture today in Philadelphia

UW–Madison Professor Emerita Gloria Ladson-Billings will deliver the AERA Distinguished Lecture today at the 2024 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Her lecture, titled “‘Not Yet at Plessy’: 70 Years Post-Brown,” will begin at 11:25 a.m. ET.

Ladson-Billings, the former Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education with the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is recognized across the United States and beyond as a pioneer whose work on culturally relevant pedagogy and critical race theory has altered how educators approach their teaching.

“Dr. Ladson-Billing’s cutting-edge scholarship connects directly to this year’s theme, ‘Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action,’ ” said AERA President Tyrone Howard in a statement on AERA’s website. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to hear her insights and learn from her wisdom.”

The American Educational Research Association (AERA), a national research society, strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good. The 2024 Annual Meeting, with the theme “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action,” is taking place in Philadelphia this weekend. The AERA Distinguished Lecture is one of the major events at the Annual Meeting.

“As one of the pioneering scholars in the areas of culturally relevant teaching, systemic racism, and economic inequality, Dr. Ladson-Billings will challenge and inspire attendees in this year’s Distinguished Lecture,” said AERA Executive Director Felice Levine.

Ladson-Billings served as AERA’s president from 2005 to 2006 and is an AERA Fellow. She is also the recipient of several AERA awards, including the 2018 Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award, the 2015 Social Justice in Education Award, the 1996 Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award, and the 1995 Scholars of Color Early Career Contribution Award.

Ladson-Billings was a faculty member with the UW-Madison School of Education from 1991 until her retirement in January 2018. She held the Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education and was a professor with the departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Policy Studies, and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. She continues to serve UW-Madison and the School of Education as a professor emerita.
