The nine council members that make up a veto-proof supermajority of the Minneapolis City Council announced their support for disbanding the Minneapolis Police Department at a rally Sunday afternoon in Powderhorn Park.

The move follows the police killing of George Floyd and more than a week of uprisings. The councilmembers and some community activists committed to ending the Minneapolis Police Department through the budget process towards the end of the rally.

The state of Minnesota launched a civil rights investigation of the police department last week and the city agreed on Friday to ban chokeholds and neck restraints and require officers to intervene anytime they see unauthorized use of force by another officer.
