Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King with a live broadcast of Wisconsin’s 43rd Annual Tribute and Ceremony from the Capitol Rotunda in Madison on Jan. 15 at noon.

The annual State of Wisconsin Tribute and Ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brings politicians, community stakeholders, civil rights leaders and the greater Madison community together at the state Capitol rotunda every year. It is the oldest official state ceremony in the nation dedicated to Martin Luther King and is produced, directed and hosted by WPR’s Dr. Jonathan Øverby

This year’s theme is “One Day,” honoring Dr. King and those who paid the ultimate price in pursuing justice, freedom, and equality during the Civil Rights Movement. “‘One Day’ will honor Dr. King’s birthday, reflect on his legacy of service, his dedication to securing equal rights for African Americans, and his belief in the power of national unity that one day might lead to a grander celebration of the American dream not for just some, but all,” Øverby said in a press release.

The event will include performances by the Chicago Mass Choir and Milwaukee’s Latino Arts Mariachi Juvenil Ensemble.

“We are proud to help Wisconsin celebrate – and learn from – the work of Dr. King,” WPR Director Sarah Ashworth said in a press release. “This annual Tribute and Ceremony is a chance to remember and recommit to America’s promise of freedom, justice and equality for all.”

The event is free and open to the public or you can tune in to wpr.org and WPR stations throughout the state to hear the broadcast. PBS Wisconsin will broadcast the ceremony live on its Wisconsin Channel at noon and will air an edited highlights program at 8 p.m. on its flagship channel. For more information, click here.
